Common Roadblocks
Why Your Sales Process Is Costing You Deals
Five reps, five processes, zero scalability.
Most founder-led sales teams don't have a process - they have a collection of personal styles. The founder closes deals one way. The first sales hire copies some of that and improvises the rest. Every new hire after that learns from whoever was free that week.
It works for a while. Then it doesn't. Pipeline becomes guesswork. Forecasts become fiction. Coaching becomes impossible because nobody can pinpoint where deals are actually getting stuck.
What a real sales motion includes
- Defined stages that describe the buyer's state, not your team's activity.
- Exit criteria for each stage - what must be true before a deal moves forward.
- Standard discovery questions so every deal gets qualified the same way.
- Clear handoffs between SDRs, AEs, and delivery.
Where to start
Pick your last 20 deals - wins and losses. Map the actual journey. You'll find the wins look similar to each other and the losses share patterns too. That's your draft sales motion.
Roll it out as a working hypothesis, not a finished bible. Iterate weekly. Within a quarter you'll have a process the whole team can actually run - and the data underneath it will finally mean something.
