Common Roadblocks

Why More People Isn't Making Things Easier

    You're not understaffed. You're under-systemised.

Founders default to hiring when things feel hard. It's the most visible, most expensive, and most legible thing you can do. The board sees it. The team sees it. You see it. And it almost never solves the actual problem.

Because in most scaling businesses, the bottleneck isn't capacity. It's structure. More people in a system that doesn't have clear ownership just creates more confusion, more handoffs, and more meetings about who's doing what.

Signs you're hiring around a structural problem

    • Onboarding takes 3+ months and nobody can really explain why.
    • The same work gets redone because two people thought they owned it (or neither did).
    • New hires get pulled into firefighting within their first month.
    • Productivity per person is dropping as the team grows.

What to do before the next hire

Map the actual workflow for your biggest function - sales, delivery, whatever's hurting most. Mark where work stalls, where it gets re-done, and where decisions sit waiting. You'll usually find two or three obvious fixes that reclaim more capacity than another hire would create.

Then, when you do hire, the new person walks into a structure that works. Instead of becoming another patch on a leaky system.
